End of the World & Hungry Ridge Project

The End of the World & Hungry Ridge Project is a landscape-scale restoration effort focused on improving forest resilience to insects, disease, wildfire, and future climate impacts in north central Idaho. Located adjacent to the community of Grangeville and fully within the ceded territory of the Nez Perce Tribe, the project also aims to protect important cultural, aquatic, and natural resources while reducing wildfire threats to nearby communities and private lands.

Proposed treatments include pre-commercial thinning, intermediate harvest, regeneration harvest outside of old-growth areas, prescribed burning, and aquatic habitat improvements designed to reduce hazardous fuels and improve forest health. Additional restoration work includes invasive species treatment, dry meadow restoration, trail improvements, campground hazard tree removal, and fuel break construction along Forest Service Road 221.

The project also includes watershed and infrastructure improvements such as road decommissioning, culvert replacement, cross-drain improvements, and stream crossing hardening to improve water quality and aquatic habitat conditions.

Project activities are designed to maintain and promote old-growth forest characteristics while supporting long-term ecosystem resilience, safer wildfire management, and healthier forests and watersheds for surrounding communities and future generations.
